U.S. mass shootings in —

How this source defines “mass shooting”

• This dataset tracks incidents where 4 or more people are shot in one event.
• This is as opposed to the FBI's definition of mass murder: 3 or more people murdered in one event.
• For example: in 2012, Travis Steed and others shot 18 people total, miraculously only killing one. As the source notes, under the FBI and mainstream media definition, this would not be considered a mass shooting.
• This definition is designed to capture the full impact of gun violence, including survivors with severe injuries and long-term trauma.
• Counting people shot reduces distortion from differences in emergency medical outcomes and highlights injury burden as well as deaths.
• The source notes that many incidents that don't reach the FBI's definition receive limited media coverage, which can make broader trends easy to miss.
